NBA Europe and EuroLeague Face a Major Decision Over European Basketball’s Future
European basketball could be heading towards a major structural change, with the NBA and EuroLeague exploring different plans for the future of the sport on the continent.
The NBA, working alongside FIBA, is targeting an October 2027 launch for its proposed European competition. The project is expected to feature 16 teams, combining permanent franchises with places earned through qualification.
Meanwhile, EuroLeague is pursuing its own development strategy, with plans to increase the competition to 24 teams for the 2027–28 campaign. The organization has also begun a process to award additional long-term franchises as part of its wider business plans.
Cooperation between the two organizations remains a possibility. However, reaching an agreement could prove challenging, as both sides have their own plans for the structure and management of top-level European club basketball.
The outcome of the ongoing discussions could determine whether the continent’s leading clubs compete within a shared framework or face two separate competitions. For clubs, players and supporters, the decisions made over the coming months could have a lasting impact on the European basketball landscape.
